Keep in mind that idioms follow their own rules. Down to earth, what on earth, and move heaven and earth do not capitalize the planet, and four corners of the earth or salt of the earth take the definite article.

“On earth” (e.g. “richest man on earth”) is one of those idioms, so the E is lowercase. See here.

It’s a bit confusing, but they aren’t literally referring to “the planet Earth” in an astronomical sense. If you were writing a sci-fi story and comparing the wealth of the richest man on Earth to, say, the richest man on Mars, then it would be capitalized.

It isn’t even an error, though. It’s just wrong. “Earth” should be lowercase. I can understand being pedantic, but pedantic and wrong is super irritating.

My dictionary says it’s lowercase. I’ve only ever seen it in lowercase, unless you’re taking about it in the astronomical sense (e.g. “the planet Earth”).

I can ssh in with Krusader and edit from Krusader’s GUI editor. I would probably still do it from the terminal because it’s faster, but it’s good to have more than one way to do things.

I love fish, but I can see why POSIX purists would hate it. I haven’t run into any problems, but if I need to use bash, I have it installed, too. The biggest problem is that it doesn’t have wide adoption, so everybody assumes you’re using bash, and a lot of the bash commands don’t work in fish. So you have to be a bit of a power user if you want to do anything fancy.

Fortunately, Linux terminals are gorgeous and easy to use. I never wanted to use Windows’ com because it was so ugly and user-hostile. I know Powershell is a thing now, but it still looks ugly to me.

Do you ever use the CLI, though?

It isn’t condescending. It’s the easiest and simplest way to do a thing. Additionally, there’s a wide variety in GUI options on Linux, so if I’m helping somebody out, I’m going to give the terminal commands. Not because I’m a terminal elitist or some nonsense, but because I know it will work regardless of whatever their GUI setup is. I might know where to go in KDE, but I don’t know where it would be in GNOME or any other desktop environment I’m unfamiliar with. The terminal command is going to be the same for everybody, though.

How were you installing from the command line? Like, what commands were you using?

You just need to know the name of the package you need to install.

On Garuda, you can enter the command in a terminal, and if isn’t installed, it will search and give you a list of packages to install from.

Linux has had a UI for decades now, and it looks a lot better than Windows. Take a look at Garuda.
